CURATOR
We present the curator of our fourth edition; the bolivian-brazilian Maíra Gamarra will be in charge of establishing a reflexive dialogue on the theme “Territory” through a selection of international projects expressed in an innovative expository proposal in public spaces of the city of San José.
Maíra Gamarra
Curator, editor, cultural manager and researcher born in Maceió, Brazil.
Her work is currently focused on researching issues that cross contemporary Latin American photography, the construction of discourses and visual narratives, processes of creation, gender and decolonization of the image and photographic practices in Latin America and the global south. She is interested in collective, collaborative and network dynamics, observing the connections and transformations that are established in the territory in order to think of strategies that contribute to provoke displacements, exchanges and practices from a decolonizing perspective.
She is founder and director of Mira Latina Lab, a space dedicated to promote activities and projects that generate dialogue and reflection on the critical and political role of image producers in contemporary times. She is co-founder of the collective 7Fotografía, one of the first photographic collectives formed by women in Brazil. She holds a Master’s degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Latin American Integration (Unila), is the coordinator of Redlafoto, a project created by the Montevideo Center of Photography – CdF and the study group GIF – Images and Feminisms, and is also a professor of the MBA Visual Culture: Photography and Latin American Art.
She has held exhibitions in different Latin American countries and has been curator and organizer of the festivals Confluencia, Mesa7 and Latin American Women Photographers Festival. She participated as a guest in events such as E.CO – Encuentro de Colectivos, Forum Latinoamericano de Fotografía de São Paulo, FestFoto Bolívia, Festival de Fotografia de Tiradentes, Cali Foto Fest, Pequeno Encontro da Fotografia, Maré Foto Festival, Efêmero Festival, Masterclass – International Photography Festival of Bogotá, Paraty em Foco, Foto Festival Solar, among others.
