Our History

SAN JOSE FOTO is an international photography festival located in the city of San José de Mayo, in the Republic of Uruguay.

The success of the first edition defined its international vocation, becoming a reference for Latin American photography, sealed its link with the inhabitants of the city, who communed with the huge photographs, mobilizing the interest and generating a debate on the subjects discussed.
Its main objective is to take the photograph to the interior of Uruguay and to approach it to the citizen on foot, betting for the use of unconventional formats and spaces, like facades of public and private buildings, linking the public with the images. An even more evident relationship in the city of San José, that has managed to maintain its unique architecture conjugated with the peaceful life of the people.

Since its first edition in 2014, it has been growing in relevance to the national photographic community and the region. The characteristics of the city of San José de Mayo makes a suitable space for encounter and intervention of the public space, with images that make a proposal available to the inhabitants and visitors of the city.

More than 3000 people visited the outdoor exhibitions in the last edition in 2016 and attended by 100 guests from different parts of the world.

The appeal of SAN JOSÉ FOTO is the ease of access from Brazil and Argentina, a scale  that allows novice photographers to dialogue with internationally renowned figures and the warmth of local people who actively participate in all proposals.

The open air exhibitions are accompanied by conferences at the San José Cultural Space, screenings in the main square, portfolio reviews, workshops, educational actions and a complete book fair. All activities developed in a context of harmony, characterized by the hospitality of the inhabitants of one of the most important cities of Uruguay.
