Colectivo Las Niñas
Through the Cromosoma X essay Colectivo Las Niñas, questions being a woman from different experiences and records. The feminine body has historically been a privileged space for cultural inscription marked by the different sceneries and contexts that surround it. This proposal is constructed in relation to a double dimension: problematizing a woman’s body as a space of oppression and also in intimate everyday as memory zone.
How do we represent the body? Which are it’s symbols, it’s dimension? What stereotypes are made graphic in women’s existence? This are questions that reveal us the necessity of a dialogue situated in the space between the house, maternity, sexuality, the affective, the ordinary and the familiar.
In this occasion “Las Niñas” talk to us from a different view that accomplishes an unique record about the historicity of Being a woman, it’s difficulties and actual challenges. Pilar Díaz shows in this context different stereotypes about women’s roll and their functions in society. Her work proposal, articulated by a montage inspired in the paper cut out games for girls, makes us question the persistence of those constructions and the necessity of cutting them out. This emphasis is also problematized by Marcela Bruna thorough a documentary story based in Monica’s experience: a Chilean woman, who must carry a pregnancy to term, though her twin babies are anencephalic. The seven month pregnancy path and the babies who do not live even an hour tension the abortion theme through a concrete, dramatic and everyday experience.
Everyday life and intimacy will be the topics discussed by Jocelyne Rodríguez, whose work rests upon the relationship femininity/house through a photography that recalls the object’s history and memory. Close women, intimate experiences that tell the secret fights and transformations inside the chilean homes. It’s from this same corner that Macarena Peñaloza placers herself in order to represent that which is hidden, forgotten: feminine sexuality. This is the sexuality that has been censored in the political field, but which has also been self censored. Talking about women’s masturbation in this context is placing a resistance to the social ways women have been understood, often as something hidden, silenced or simply denied.
“Las Niñas” take us through a path that constantly questions our context. Their work relates to personal, social and political experience so that an actual dialogue about the mechanisms in which Being a woman and reproducing that same idea can be understood through a multiplicity of registers and formats can be made.
